YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee Launches 2026 Racial Justice Challenge: “Democracy in Progress: Voting Rights at 250”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – April 2, 2026 – In a city shaped by the courage of student sit-ins, the persistence of organizers, and the ongoing pursuit of equity, YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee announces the launch of its 2026 Racial Justice Challenge, beginning April 6 and running through May 4.

Now in its sixth year, the Challenge continues to engage participants across Nashville and beyond in learning that connects past struggles to present realities and future possibilities. Presented by the Harnisch Foundation, this year’s theme, “Democracy in Progress: Voting Rights at 250,” invites participants to reflect on the evolving story of voting rights in the United States and the role each of us plays in shaping what comes next.

“Nashville holds a powerful place in the history of social change, from the student-led sit-ins to the continued work of expanding access and opportunity,” said YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee President & CEO Sharon K. Roberson. “The Racial Justice Challenge invites us to learn from that history, reflect on where we are today, and consider how each of us can contribute to a more just future.”

In a reimagined format designed for greater depth and accessibility, the 2026 Challenge will focus on a single topic over four weeks. Each day, participants will receive one carefully curated learning experience, including an article, video, podcast, or action step. This approach allows for deeper engagement with the complexities of voting rights while remaining accessible for individuals and groups.

Since its launch in 2020, the Racial Justice Challenge has served as a flexible learning tool for individuals, workplaces, classrooms, and community groups. Participants are invited to engage at their own pace while building a shared foundation for dialogue and action.

YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee is grateful to the Harnisch Foundation for its longtime support as presenting sponsor and the Nissan Foundation for its continued support of this educational initiative.

As a nonpartisan organization, YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee encourages informed civic engagement grounded in learning and reflection. Voting remains a central expression of participation in community life, and understanding its history and ongoing evolution is key to ensuring that all voices are recognized and valued.

Registration for the 2026 Racial Justice Challenge is now open. Participants can sign up to receive daily content and join a growing community committed to learning, reflection, and meaningful engagement
