Celebrating Determination and Achievement: YWCA’s Family Learning Center Graduation
The 2025 FLC graduating class with beloved instructor Joaquina Martinez at the Saturday, July 12 ceremony.
(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) July 12, 2025 - This summer, YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee proudly celebrated the accomplishments of 17 remarkable adult learners who earned their high school equivalency diplomas through our Family Learning Center (FLC). Friends, families, and supporters gathered at YWCA’s main office in Green Hills to honor the graduates and recognize the resilience and determination it took to pass the rigorous HiSET exam.
Keynote speaker Dr. Yolanda Oliver, a respected community advocate and entrepreneur, shared words of encouragement and inspiration with the graduates, reminding them that their educational journey doesn’t end here—it’s just the beginning.
Over the past year, more than 100 adult learners turned to the FLC for one-on-one tutoring, test prep, and individualized support. Whether pursuing a better job, enrolling in college, or simply setting an example for their children, these students show that it’s never too late to achieve your goals. This year’s graduates range in age from 18 to 58-years-old.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of the Betty Alexander Resilience Award to longtime FLC teacher Joaquina Martinez. Known for her compassion, patience, and unwavering support, Ms. Martinez has empowered hundreds of adult students to believe in themselves and their futures.
This life-changing work wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our funders: the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, United Way of Greater Nashville, and Jackson National Life Insurance Company. Their commitment to educational equity is helping break cycles of poverty and creating stronger families across Middle Tennessee.
Congratulations to our graduates—your perseverance inspires us all.
Huge thanks to our longtime volunteer and Junior Board Committee member Carly Clark for these beautiful photos.
