Survivors First Initiative

Innovative, trauma-informed partnership between YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee and the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office designed to support survivors of domestic violence who become entangled in the criminal justice system.

Survivors First is an innovative, trauma-informed partnership between YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee and the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office designed to support survivors of domestic violence who become entangled in the criminal justice system. Too often, survivors are arrested for actions taken while defending themselves, protecting their children, or surviving coercive control. Survivors First redirects these individuals away from prosecution and toward safety, healing, and long-term stability.

Through the program, eligible participants receive comprehensive support including risk assessment, case management, safety planning, and access to YWCA services such as shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, adult education, and workforce development. Rather than facing charges, survivors work with trained professionals to address the root causes of harm and build a pathway to independence.

Meet Us at the Bridge

In recognition of its impact, Survivors First was named the 2025 Innovative Program of the Year by the Nashville Coalition Against Domestic Violence at its annual Meet Us at the Bridge ceremony.
