One visit changed everything. Julia took her three children to the county health department for their checkup. Staff noticed something troubling — her husband clutched her ID tightly, refusing to hand it over. Once in the exam room, a nurse asked a lifesaving question: “Are you safe?” — and everything changed. 

That one question led to a call with YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee’s Crisis & Support Hotline. Working together, our advocates and the medical team created a safety plan. The next day, Julia returned under the pretext of a follow-up appointment. Upon arrival, she and her children, each carrying one backpack, quietly escaped through the back of the building.
